This is not meant in ANY way to replace your veterinarian.  Rather, this is intended to educate, so that you may be a better partner in working with your veterinarian in providing care for camelids.  Do NOT attempt to diagnosis any illness at home.  Any animal that you suspect may have a medical problem should be taken quickly to your veterinarian.

A vaccine is simply a preparation that stimulates the immune system to develop antibodies against the injected organism, this is termed active immunity, similar to a natural infection.  The immune system is a highly dynamic system and does respond quickly when challenged, but building organism specific antibodies still takes time.  I like to think of vaccinations as preventive medicine.  This is intended to allow the animals' immune system to be capable of responding in the face of a disease challenge and does not become ill.

The following vaccination protocol is what is used here on our farm.  Vaccination programs should be tailored to each individual farm, with your veterinarian, to take into considerations diseases within a herd or on nearby farms.

Pre-Weaning                    Vaccine

    30 days old*                      Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

    60 days old                        Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

Weaning                            Vaccine

    4-6 months old                    Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

Yearling                            Vaccine

    12 months                            Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

                                                    or  Clostridium 7 or 8way

Adult                                Vaccine

    Annually                              Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

                                                    or  Clostridium 7 or 8way

Pre-Breeding                    Vaccine

    7 days pre-breeding            Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

                                                    or  Clostridium 7 or 8way

Pre-Parturition                 Vaccine

60 days before birthing        Clostridium C & D with Tetanus

*I do not vaccinate prior to 30 days due to the immature immune system in neonates.  In special circumstances a cria may need to be vaccinated earlier.

Other Vaccinations to consider, if warranted:  Rabies, West Nile Virus (unknown efficacy), Leptospira, E. coli, Equine Rhinovirus and Influenza
